Yves Rouquette est une personnalité emblématique de la période post-1968. Déjà connu comme un jeune écrivain prometteur à la fin des années 1950 où il publie ses premiers recueils poétiques, il devient rédacteur en chef de la revue OC et se voit décerné le Grand prix des Lettres occitanes dès 1962. Il s’impose ensuite progressivement comme un homme de pensée et d’action qui marque durablement le mouvement occitan contemporain. Né à Sète en 1936, Rouquette a 50 ans lors de cet échange avec le journaliste Jean-Pierre Laval. Il est chez lui à « La Serre », à Camarès dans l’Aveyron, ce lieu des origines où il passa une partie de son enfance avant de s’y fixer définitivement à la retraite avec sa compagne, l’écrivaine et chanteuse Marie Rouanet. La Serre est le théâtre de nombreux textes, aux côtés de Sète, la ville de l’adolescence, où il découvre « la dignité de l’occitan » au collège Paul-Valéry avec son professeur Robert Lafont, et où il se lie d’amitié fraternelle et artistique avec le peintre Pierre François. Il évoque ici son rapport à la langue : langue exclusive des grands-parents, langue des parents entre eux, langue reconquise en dignité grâce à Robert Lafont.
