Abstract
The "India" was built in 1871 by Gibson and Craig of Cleveland, Ohio. A propeller steamer, the "India" was known as the "City of Ottawa" from 1907 to 1928 during Canadian ownership. From 1929 to 1930, the vessel was renamed the "Sault Ste. Marie." She became the "India" again in 1930. Originally in the passenger and freight trade, the "India" after 1930 was generally seen in tow by the "Marita," hauling scrap steel from Cleveland to Detroit and Monroe, Michigan. Sold along with the "Marita" in 1942 to the U. S. War Shipping Administration, the vessel was towed down the Mississippi to New Orleans. There it was discovered that the she could not be used for the government's intended purposes. She was scrapped in 1948.
