Abstract
Il libro è il sesto volume della collana "Civiltà veneta nel mondo" promossa dall'Assessorato ai Flussi Migratori della Regione Veneto. Una ventina di collaboratori, italiani e canadesi, hanno ricostruito gli aspetti salienti dell'emigrazione italiana e veneta in Canada dalla fine dell'800 al secondo dopoguerra. Attualmente dei 34 milioni di persone che vivono in Canada circa un milione e mezzo sono di origine italiana, concentrati soprattutto nell'Ontario, nel Quebec e nella British Columbia, mentre l'italiano è la lingua madre di mezzo milione di canadesi, terza lingua dopo inglese e francese. Si tratta di una comunità ormai perfettamente inserita, che è riuscita a superare pregiudizi e diffidenze e si sta imponendo nei più diversi settori della vita pubblica: imprendidoria, commercio, università, letteratura, editoria, professioni, pubblica amministrazione, politica, sindacato. Leggendo le pagine di questo volume apprendiamo che in molti casi sono bastati pochi decenni per trasformare generici emigranti in uomini di successo nei più diversi settori professionali. Una storia di emigraziione, quella narrata in questo libro con larghezza di riferimenti alla storia e all'attualità, che merita di essere conosciuta e che può insegnare molto all'Italia di oggi, divenuta a sua volta, come il Canada di ieri, terra di immigrazione.
