Post-fire conifer regeneration dynamics in boreal mixedwood stands
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This thesis examines the effects of fire severity on conifer regeneration dynamics in boreal aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.)conifermixedwood stands bumed by wild fire. The data were collected as part of the i999 Black River fire project from annual sowing of four conifer species on three different fire-prepared seedbeds. The thesis has five chapters: a general introduction and literature review (Chapter 1), three stand alone chapters (Chapters 2, 3 , and 4), and a brief summary (Chapter 5).Chapter 1 describes the 1999 Black Ri,r", fire project and contains a review of the literature.Chapter 2 focuses on the first three post-fire years, Chapter 3 examines all eight post-fire years, and Chapter 4 contains a laboratory study on the effects of ash on conifer germination. The final chapter, Chapter 5, summarizes key results from the entire thesis.Chapter 2, entitled; "Are mineral soils exposed by wildfire better seedbeds for conifer regeneration?",examines the germination and survival of the first three post-fire cohorts (1999-2001) ofjack pine (Pinus banksíana Lamb), black spruce (Ptcea mariana (Mill.)B.S.P.), and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). The hypothesis that seed germination and seedling survival increase with fire severity was tested. This Chapter has been published in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research (Kemball et al. 2006).Chapter 3, entitled; "Fire severity and early conifer recruitment on boreal aspenconifer mixedwood stands", examines the effect of fire severity on jack pine, black spruce, white spruce, and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) germination and two-year survival. Also included in Chapter 3 is an examination of the effect of fire severity on microclimate conditions and plant community composition.ln Chapter 3 the following hypotheses were tested: (H1) seed germination and seedling survival of artificially sown jack pine, black spruce, white spruce, and balsam fir increase with fire severity; (H2) with repeated sowing eachyear, germination and seedling survivorship decreases with the time-since-fire when seeds are sown; (H3) fire adapted fiack pine and black spruce) and non-fire adapted (white spruce and balsam fir) species differ in post-fire germination and survival success with time-since-f,rre.Chapter 4, entitled; "Laboratory assessment of the effect of forest floor ash on conifer germination", is a laboratory analysis of the possible toxic effects of forest floor ash on conifer germination and seed viability.1 .2 BLACK R|VER F|RE PROJECTResearch for this thesis was conducted in the Lac Seul Upland ecoregion of the Boreal ecozone (Ecological Stratification Working Group 1995) as part of a long-term study initiated by G. Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
