Abstract
None of the existing lines of railway between Chicago and New York, have been located and constructed with reference to cheap transporta- tion.The great and increasing traffic between these points, now demands a line of railway which will afford the cheapest transportation practicable.With a few changes in the existing lines of railway between Buffalo and New York, grades of not exceeding fifteen feet per mile and good alignment, can be obtained, which will make, in connection with the Canada Southern, and the Chicago and Canada Southern Railway^, a line over almost a level plain, the entire dis- tance from Chicago to New York.No better evidence of the value of low grades can be given than that which is exemplified by the experienced managers of the Pennsylvania Railway Company, who are now en-rt
