The discovery of annually laminated sediments in Grand Lake reveals the first continuous varved record identified in the boreal forest of Labrador. The depth of the lake, the availability of fine sediments in the watershed, the importance of seasonal river inflow, and the stratification of the water column have favoured the formation and preservation of clastic varves of fluvial origin. Data from physico-chemical profiling of the water column and from a mooring equipped with two sequential sediment traps and temperature sensors provide information on the formation and deposition of laminated sediments in the lake. The results indicate marked seasonality in lake stratification and sediment inputs. Moreover, they highlight a close link between hydrological conditions, internal dynamics of the water column and sediment inputs. These observations demonstrate that Grand Lake behaves as a dimictic lake conducive to the formation of hypopycnal and hyperpycnal currents. The analysis of short sediment cores collected at the head of the lake confirms that the laminations are annual and constitute excellent natural paleohydrological indicators with high temporal precision. The formation of proximal varves is related to spring flow conditions with contributions from summer and fall rainfall events. A long core from a distal site allows the varved sequence to be extended beyond the last millennium. The chronology of the sedimentary sequences is established from high-resolution image analysis of thin sections and validated by radiometric dating (137Cs and 14C). The statistically significant relationship between varve physical parameters extracted from thin sections and the Naskaupi River discharge observations provides the opportunity to develop the first annual hydrological reconstruction on the western fringe of the North Atlantic Ocean, covering the past 1500 years. The results reveal that Labrador river discharge was high during the Medieval Climate Optimum and lower during the Little Ice Age, and that it was influenced by modes of North Atlantic climate variability. This thesis presents discharge series that offer a millennial perspective on past hydrological variability in the large watershed of the Labrador Sea. This study highlights the importance of clastic varved records for understanding the evolution of water resources in this important hydroelectric power producing region.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
