Abstract
Este trabalho apresenta o estudo da produção escrita de vinte e quatro alunos da Licenciatura em Matemática, da Universidade Estadual de Londrina, UEL., na resolução de uma questão da Prova de questões abertas de matemática da 4ª série do ensino fundamental, da avaliação do Rendimento Escolar do Paraná - AVA/2002. Faz um levantamento das estratégias mais utilizadas e dos erros mais frequentes na busca de identificar a natureza desses erros. Aponta que é possível descobrir muito sobre o conhecimento matemático dos alunos por meio do registro escrito. Aponta que os alunos dominam os algoritmos que são ensinados na escola, pois mostram isso em seus registros, e que a interpretação de enunciados aparece como a maior dificuldade sentida por eles.
