Saxons' season ends with loss to Rowan in first round of NCAA championships 11/12/03 GLASSBORO, NJ --The Alfred University men's soccer team saw its season end Wednesday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to host Rowan University in a first-round NCAA Division III tournament game.The Saxons (9-6-4, 3-3 Empire 8) trailed by only a goal, 2-1, at halftime, before allowing three unanswered scores after intermission.Rowan (19-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead 26 minutes into the contest.Dwayne Reevey scored at the 16:58 mark and Matthew Flynn netted a goal nine minutes later.AU freshman forward Bobby Linaberry (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored an unassisted goal five minutes later to cut the Saxons' deficit in half.Richard Dominiak scored 13 minutes into the second to give Rowan a 3-1 lead.Reevey's second goal, with 11 minutes left in regulation, and another by Kenada Putmon at the 82:40 mark, closed out the scoring.Freshman Brian Middleton (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) started in goal for Alfred, allowing five goals and making four saves in just over 85 minutes of action.Freshman Jim Roberts (Syracuse/Westhill) and sophomore William Brown (Woodbury, VT/Hazen Union) split time over the final minutes.Anthony Clemente went the distance in net for Rowan, stopping two shots.Alfred ends one of its most successful seasons in recent years.The Saxons played in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1988 and earned their second Empire 8 conference co-championship in three seasons.All 11 starters are set to return in 2004 and only senior, midfielder Ian Hoffman (Halifax, PA/Halifax), will be lost to graduation.
