Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Abstract. This research reconstructs an early history of the Pentecostal movements in a historical context characterized by the hegemonic of the Catholic religion, large cracks inside the social body, and the division of the politicals elits about two proposed National State: Liberal-Secular and Catholic Conservative. The origin of the Pentecostal movements in Colombia, had an exogenous since it was mediated through Pentecostal missions from the United States and Canada. Upon arrival to the country, Pentecostal missions shared historical experiences of religious and political exclusion as well as other evangelical Protestant missions, this made similar develop logical expansion and adaptation. The presence of Pentecostal missions was minority in relation to the Protestant missions and its expansion was marginal in those places especially in the region of the Llanos del Casanare, Boyacá and Santander. Those missions that settled in urban context, they did so in peripheral areas of developing cities as Bucaramanga, Bogota and Barranquilla. The arrival of Pentecostal missions is identified with the period known political Liberal Republic (1930-1946), a period in which Colombia experienced the largest Protestant missions arrived. The causes of the massive influx of missionary enterprise is largely due to a pre-millennial perception of political reality, the opportunity structure that resulted in the closeness relations between Colombia and the USA (Good neighbor policy) and the period hegemonic Liberal Party in power. The massive presence of Protestant missions captured the attention among the Catholic hierarchy, who lead a systematic campaign of the anti-Protestant be accentuated later in the period of Violence in Colombia.
