Abstract

Although Diesel engines are a good candidate for mitigating climate change and slowing down the depletion of fossil fuel reserves because of its high efficiency, they tend to emit more particulate matters that are in turn detrimental to climate and human health. This paper deals with the development of a soot model, which improves the understanding of soot formation in a Diesel engine cylinder at minimal extra computational cost. It is shown that the incorporation of the major steps related to fuel pyrolysis, soot inception and growth allows an improved description of the soot formation dynamics in a Diesel engine cylinder.
