Thí nghiệm nuôi cá sặc rằn bằng thức ăn công nghiệp, phân heo tươi và nước thải biogas được tiến hành đồng thời trong ao 100 m2 và mật độ cá nuôi là 10 con/m2. Trong ao nuôi cá số 1, lượng thức ăn công nghiệp được cung cấp hàng ngày là 5% trọng lượng cá, hàm lượng đạm trong thức ăn là 42% trong 2 tháng đầu, 35% trong 2 tháng kế tiếp và 30% trong hai tháng cuối. Lượng đạm trong phân heo tươi và nước thải cung cấp cho ao số 2 và 3 được xác định ban đầu và cung cấp hàng ngày cho ao nuôi với số lượng sao cho lượng đạm của nó tương ứng với lượng đạm trong thức ăn công nghiệp. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã xác định được 76 loài động vật phiêu sinh thuộc 4 nhóm. Trong đó ngành trùng bánh xe (Rotatoria) có số loài phong phú nhất. Ao nuôi cá bằng nước thải biogas có số lượng động vật nổi cao nhất và biến động từ 163.520 – 1.504.800 ct/m3. Sau 6 tháng, cá được nuôi bằng nước thải biogas có trọng lượng tương tự với cá nuôi bằng thức ăn công nghiệp. Chất lượng thịt cá trong 3 ao thí nghiệm đều không nhiễm vi sinh vật và rất an toàn để sử dụng làm thực phẩm. Nên sử dụng nước thải từ hệ thống ủ biogas để nuôi cá sặc rằn góp phần tăng thu nhập cho nông hộ.
