Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This thesis is an investigation of how Somali women perceive their gender identity and sexuality in a Canadian context. Popular ideas of Somali women's identity, gender and sexuality in Canada are examined with attention to their experience with medical professionals. Particular attention was payed to the effects of female genital cutting on their gender identity in a new social context. Parenting was consistently raised as the most important issue for women in the Somali community. Given the emphasis participants placed on motherhood as central to their gender identity, my research broadened to include experiences of parenting. Findings showed that circumcision did impact how Somali women experienced medical encounters in Canada, but many of the conflicting conceptualizations of gender which proved most problematic for Somali women adjusting to life in Canada had more to do with integration in a relatively secular, non-Muslim society generally.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
