Günümüzde seyahat etmek hayli kolaylaşmıştır. Uçakla, trenle, otobüsle ve özel araçla seyahat eden pek çok insan vardır. Yapılan bu seyahatler de genel itibarıyla yeni yerleri görmek ve buna bağlı olarak tatil yapma keyfini çıkarmak amaçlanmaktadır. Oysa günümüzdeki hızlı ve kolay ulaşım araçlarının henüz olmadığı zamanlarda seyahat etmenin ne kadar zor olduğu bilinmektedir. Üstelik yapılan bu seyahatlerin çoğu daha çok yeni diyarları keşfetme ve keşfedilen yeni yerlerin fiziki, coğrafi, sosyo-kültürel vs. özellikleri dünyaya tanıtma, bilgi aktarma gibi amaçları gütmekteydi. Bu bilgi aktarımını sağlayanlar da şüphesiz ki seyyahlar veya bir başka deyişle gezginlerdir.
