Abstract
Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg den politisk-ideologiske historiebrukens rolle innen formingen av den moderne greske staten. Det greske kongeriket ble i 1832 den første staten til dukke opp på Europa-kartet siden den franske revolusjonen. Etter rundt 400 år under osmansk styre ble bruken av historie et sentralt virkemiddel helt fra starten av, ettersom antikkens Hellas var idealisert over store deler av Vest-Europa. Det geografiske området som det moderne Hellas utgjør har dog en svært mangfoldig historie som inkluderer ulike imperier og dominante herskere. Ettersom de politiske utfordringene til staten endret seg, endret historiebruken seg parallelt. Fra å oppmuntre til en identitet basert på antikkens Hellas, ble Bysantinsk middelalder og antikk makedonsk historie inkorporert i det nasjonale narrativet i en tid hvor det greske politiske fokuset var på å ekspandere territorielt. Perioden fra 1832 til 1923 fastsetter både de territorielle grensene som Hellas i stor grad har frem til vår egen tid, og former den moderne greske identiteten med historie som ypperste redskap.
