An urban fine smithing quarter in the <em>oppidum</em> of Rheinau (canton Zürich, Switzerland)

Abstract
During the late Iron Age the oppidum of Rheinau/Altenburg belonged to a large, fortified settlement area. Since 1930 numerous excavations have brought to light settlement structures of an urban character and in several places within the settlement metalworking took place. In 1994, the Kantonsarchäologie Zürich excavated a smithy in this settlement during which improved excavation and documentation methods were applied. This allowed the reconstruction of the organization of smithing activities covering a period of about 40 years. Tools, failed artefacts (among them iron fibulae), metal waste, slag, hammerscale and brick tuyères indicate the existence of a fine smithy. All waste products were analysed chemically and the metal waste studied metallographically. Thus, the smithing activity and a locally-worked metal type could be identified.
