Depuis une dizaine d'années, les politiques de ville durable ont tendance à survaloriser l'aspect climatique, au détriment de questions aussi importantes que les conditions de vie ou les inégalités environnementales par exemple. Or, les impératifs du développement durable et ceux du changement climatique ne sont pas nécessairement les mêmes. Il y a parfois de réelles contradictions, dont il est question dans ce numéro thématique. Elles appellent des arbitrages délicats, qui ne sont pas nécessairement les mêmes des deux côtés de l'Atlantique, que les contributeurs de ce numéro s'emploient à éclairer. Ce numéro est le fruit des Journées d'études franco-canadiennes sur le développement durable qui ont eu lieu à Grenoble dans le cadre du séminaire de recherche BABEL – Construire les notions-clés du développement durable.
