Abstract
In een multiculturele samenleving zijn gevoelens van verbondenheid niet vanzelfsprekend. Daarmee is ook een gedeeld burgerschap niet zonder meer aan de orde. Aan de hand van de sociale netwerken van Haïtiaanse migranten in Montréal, kijk ik in deze scriptie hoe zij vormgeven aan burgerschap. Het feit dat vriendschapsnetwerken tekenend zijn voor het tot stand komen van verbondenheid, maakt sociability tot een relevante invalshoek voor het benaderen van burgerschap. Via de sociale netwerken van Haïtianen laat ik zien dat multicultureel burgerschap, dat in Canada wordt gepromoot om migranten van diverse afkomst aan het land te binden, niet leidt tot insluiting in de natie. Ik bespreek andere vormen van burgerschap maar pleit op basis van mijn onderzoeksgegevens uiteindelijk voor herdefiniëring van het begrip burgerschap.
