Ambiguously Hip: The Tragically Hip and Canadian\nNationalism

Abstract
The Tragically Hip are a remarkable, indeed unique, phenomenon in Canadian popular music. Their 2016 final tour, undertaken after lead singer Gordon Downie was diagnosed with brain cancer, spectacularly reinforced longstanding perceptions of a privileged link between the band’s music and Canadian national identity. This article probes this connection, asking why deeply ambiguous and often critical references to Canada sufficed to raise The Hip to an extraordinary status as icons of Canadian nationalism. Drawing from theories of “banal” and “everyday” nationalism, it argues that, while The Hip’s work may legitimately be read as nationalist, Canada’s position as a culturally peripheral nation is the key to explaining the incongruous appropriation of the Hip’s work for nationalist self-celebration. The discourse around The Tragically Hip, then, helps to illuminate some of the ways in which nationalism works in a culturally peripheral context. Sa dernière tournée, en 2016, entreprise après qu’on eut diagnostiqué un cancer du cerveau chez le chanteur Gordon Downie, a renforcé de façon spectaculaire la perception entretenue depuis longtemps d’un lien privilégié entre la musique du groupe et l’identité nationale canadienne. L’article examine ce lien par cette question: pourquoi a-t-il suffi de parler du Canada de manière profondément ambiguë et souvent critique pour que The Tragically Hip accède au statut extraordinaire d’icône du nationalisme canadien? S’inspirant des théories du « nationalisme ordinaire » ou « de tous les jours », l’article soutient que, si l’œuvre de The Hip peut avec raison passer pour nationaliste, la position du Canada en tant que nation culturellement en marge constitue la clé permettant d’expliquer l’appropriation incongrue de l’œuvre de The Hip à des fins d’apologie nationaliste.
