Abstract
Introduction: military and sports physical activities are responsible for frequent, costly, and disabling injuries within military populations. Ankle sprains remain the most common, with varied treatment approaches despite numerous studies. The primary objective of this study is to describe the use of Ottawa criteria and the prescription of corresponding examinations as recommended by the SFMU, during the initial consultation for suspected ankle sprains in military personnel treated within the 5th Military Health Service. Methods: this is a descriptive, retrospective, observational study conducted on a military population with acute ankle trauma suggestive of a sprain. Data were collected from injury records of the 13th Parachute Dragoon Regiment, then anonymized following non-opposition from the subjects. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using R 4.0.3 software. Results: SFMU recommendations were followed in 58.3% of cases. In 23.5% of cases, additional examinations were prescribed, with ultrasound being the priority. In 18.2% of cases, proper adherence to recommendations was not found in medical records, resulting in a missed opportunity for the patient. None of them were managed by an internal medicine physician ; nearly 83% were treated by a physician with over 8 years of experience. Discussion: the main identified bias is a lack of traceability in medical records, potentially overestimating the proportion of missing prescriptions. Military personnel, viewed as high-level athletes due to their training hours and the impact on their profession, are often prescribed more examinations than recommended. This facilitates the early identification of potential associated injuries and their prompt treatment, reducing the consequences of prolonged absence for the military forces.
