En 1987, Michel L’Hour avait conduit des expertises sur l’atoll des Bassas da India (L’Hour et al. 1987), et dès la fin des années 1980, le Drassm a entrepris de dresser à partir des archives un premier inventaire des sites archéologiques sous-marins potentiels de l’aire mahoraise et des îles Éparses du canal de Mozambique.
