Comparaison des rôles des firmes Hancock & Nephew et Rotch & Sons avant et pendant la révolution américaine et les constantes oppositions entre les industries morutière et baleinière en Nouvelle-Angleterre de la déportation des Acadiens en 1755 à la guerre de 1812, au Massachusetts. Oppositions commerciale, stratégique, militaire (quant à la Nouvelle-France et les grands bancs terre-neuvas), idéologique (morutiers travaillant pour nourrir les esclaves des plantations de canne à sucre aux Antilles et armateurs baleiniers quakers abolitionnistes, morutiers patriotes et armateurs baleiniers neutres), physique (opposition entre John Hancock et les frères Rotch lors de la Boston Tea Party).
