Réformer des chiens d utilité, spécifiquement dédiés à l aide aux personnes non-voyantes ou handicapées est une pratique onéreuse. C est pourquoi, il est important de limiter au maximum le nombre de chiots devenant physiquement inaptes à l âge adulte pour causes de santé, telles que la dysplasie coxo-fémorale. Ce travail de thèse rassemble, d une part, des données bibliographiques concernant les relations entre la croissance et le développement anormal de l articulation coxo-fémorale et, d autre part, les résultats de l étude réalisée par l auteur à partir de données fournies par le Centre d Etude, de Sélection, et d Elevage de Chiens-guides pour Aveugles et autres Handicapés (CESECAH). Les croissances de 655 chiots retrievers ont été étudiées entre J1 et J75. Ce travail met en évidence l existence de deux profils de chiots à risque, susceptibles de développer une dysplasie coxo-fémorale à l âge adulte. D une part, les chiots qui grossissent trop rapidement et précocement. Ceux-ci seront opérés par symphysiodèse. D autre part, des chiots qui présentent un retard de croissance significatif à J35 et qui le compensent rapidement lors de la période de sevrage. Toutefois, l apparition de la DCF, estelle liée au retard de croissance pendant l allaitement, à une croissance trop rapide lors du sevrage, ou à des variations de poids trop rapides sur une courte période ? L étude ne permet pas de conclure à ce sujet.
