Abstract
This thesis aims at analysing how Nancy Huston's La virevolte (1994) and Prodige (1999) approach the reconciliation between creation and procreation. For a long time, women were reduced to their power of reproduction and kept away from creation. By taking possession of their own female bodies, by redefining maternity away from the control of patriarchy and by recognising mutuality between mother and daughter, women can now embody the mother, the woman and the artist roles. The use of feminist literary criticism, of works on maternity and of theories of enunciation will allow us to set forth the female characters' maternal and daughterly subjectivity and to grasp the challenge for mothers to personify harmoniously the three roles. This theoretical input will help us demonstrate that Nancy Huston tries to explore two different but complementary configurations of the creation/procreation equation. Even though the attempt fails in both cases, the author succeeds in depicting the issues at stake in all their complexity.
