Abstract
Death of superstar polar bear Knut has been solved five years after his sudden death. The mystery surrounding the death of superstar polar bear Knut's been solved five years after he died suddenly at the Berlin Zoo. Knut had been abandoned by his mother and the Berlin Zoo took him in and raised him, from bottle feedings to teaching him how to walk. Knut became so famous, photographer Annie Leibovitz took pictures of him that made the cover of Vanity Fair. He became the first polar bear cub to survive past infancy at the Berlin Zoo in more than 30 years. But in 20-11 he suffered a seizure and drowned in his enclosure as horrified zoo visitors watched. Now after much study, scientists say he had an autoimmune disease of the brain, known as the anti-N-M-D-A receptor encephalitis. The disease forces the immune system to attack healthy nerve cells instead of the diseased ones. It was only discovered in humans 8-years ago and until now it's been thought it only affected humans. Writing in the journal Scientific Reports, experts say Knut's case will spark new research about the disease in domestic and wild animals. The disease responds to aggressive treatment in humans and scientists say it's possible that could also save animals in the future.
