De invloed van perfectionisme op stress onder studenten

Abstract
Nederlandse studenten lijken steeds meer last te hebben van psychische klachten waaronder stress. Daarnaast blijkt uit onderzoek dat studenten uit Amerika, Canada en de UK een stijging laten zien in perfectionisme. Dit is een zorgwekkende trend, aangezien perfectionisme samenhangt met verschillende psychische klachten. Of er ook sprake is van een hoog niveau aan perfectionisme onder Nederlandse studenten is niet bekend. Het huidige onderzoek heeft onderzocht of stress onder Nederlandse studenten verklaard zou kunnen worden door een hoog niveau aan perfectionisme. Perfectionisme bestaat volgens de literatuur uit drie dimensies: zelf-georiënteerd, ander-georiënteerd en sociaal voorgeschreven perfectionisme. Door middel van een cross-sectioneel onderzoek bestaande uit een vragenlijst afgenomen onder 134 hbo en wo-studenten, is er onderzocht of de drie dimensies van perfectionisme voorspellers zijn van het stressniveau van deze studenten. Uit de data-analyse blijkt dat een hoge score op zelf-georiënteerd en sociaal voorgeschreven perfectionisme samenhangt met meer stress. Een hoge score op ander-georiënteerd perfectionisme hangt daarentegen samen met minder stress. De invloed van deze dimensies perfectionisme op stress is hetzelfde voor mannelijke en vrouwelijke studenten. Een bewustzijn van deze dimensies van perfectionisme kan gebruikt worden om deze zelfkritische houding te verminderen en stress onder studenten hopelijk te verlagen.
