Abstract
Successeur de La Fontaine, George-Étienne Cartier (1814-1873) (DBC, X : 155-166) voit un avenir dans une Confédération canadienne qui soit en même temps « la conservation du principe monarchique » et une marque de distinction avec la République des États-Unis. Cartier nourrit la tradition fédéraliste dans la pensée politique québécoise et lui donne une coloration conservatrice agréable à l’Église.
