Abstract
L'important potentiel hydraulique du Québec, la «houille blanche», a été dompté par la construction de barrages afin de générer de l'électricité dès le début de l'utilisation de cette forme d'énergie à la fin du siècle dernier. L'évolution des techniques de construction et le rôle joué par les ingénieurs francophones sont au coeur de la présente étude. L'examen des réalisations d'une compagnie privée : la Shawinigan Water and Power, d'un organisme gouvernemental : la Commission des eaux courantes et d'une compagnie publique : l'Hydro-Québec permet de suivre l'évolution de 1898 à 1963, alors que la deuxième nationalisation crée un quasi-monopole d'État dans la construction de barrages hydro-électriques. Cet examen démontre clairement l'existence de deux périodes : 1898 à la première nationalisation de 1944, où les compagnies privées et leur ingénieurs anglophones sont à l'avant-garde des développements; 1944 à 1963, marquée par l'appropriation du domaine par l'Hydro-Québec et l'émergence des ingénieurs francophones.
