Bu araştırmada, Türk toplumundaki dini oluşum ve bu oluşum süreci içerisindeki Türk aydınının rolü ile ilgili olarak Erol Güngör’ün anlayış ve yorumları tespit edip incelemeye çalışılmıştır.Erol Güngör’ün bakış açısıyla ‘din’in geçmişi insanlık tarihi kadar eski olduğuna göre, geleceği de yine insanlık tarihi kadar uzun ömürlü olacaktır. Türkiye İslam kültür ve medeniyetine dahil olduğu için, o kültür içinde yer alan eserler yaratmıştır. Şimdi ise Türkiye’de ortak bir kültür yoktur. Türkiye henüz belli bir medeniyet dairesinin üyesi de olmuş değildir.Türkiye’de yaşanan kültürel, dolayısıyla dini değişim süreci içerisinde; dini sırf bir bilgi sistemi olarak ele almak ve dinin sosyal hayattaki yerini ve önemini bilmemek yüzünden hatalara düşülmektedir.İslam davasının asıl yükü ise aydınların, fikir adamlarının omuzlarına yüklenmektedir. Müslüman aydınlar ve din adamları, alimler, mütefekkirler, sanatkarlar bu sorumluluğun şuuruna ermek zorundadırlar.
