Abstract
La población americana se desarrolló, durante miles de años, libre de las epidemias que venían atacando Europa, Asia y África. Las migraciones europeas y africanas, después del primer viaje de Colón, produjeron una invasión epidémica de gripe, viruela, sarampión, fiebre amarilla, malaria, difteria, tifus y otras enfermedades que atacaron a las poblaciones inmunológicamente vírgenes y produjeron una altísima mortalidad, con una disminución de la población indígena de más del 90% en muchos lugares. Según los datos históricos, la primera epidemia fue la gripe, producida por la cepa porcina del virus, seguida inmediatamente por la viruela. Los españoles se aparearon libremente con los indios, dando lugar a una raza mixta llamada mestiza, inmunológicamente más capaz de defenderse de diversos virus, bacterias y parásitos traídos del Viejo Mundo. El matrimonio entre las razas también fue autorizado por la reina Isabel (1503) y Fernando I (1515). Con estas nuevas defensas inmunológicas genéticas contra las infecciones, los mestizos acabaron constituyendo la mayoría de la población indígena del Nuevo Mundo.
