Abstract
The capture of an escaped killer means the nightmare is finally over, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said as he announced details of David Sweat's shooting and arrest. Sweat and another inmate broke out of prison in upstate New York 22 days ago before an officer shot him Sunday. Cuomo said the officer called out to Sweat when he saw him walking down a road in the town of Constable. But Sweat ran toward a tree line near the Canadian border. New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says Sweat didn't have a gun and his injuries aren't considered life threatening. The other inmate in the escape, Richard Matt, was shot and killed Friday. D'Amico said the men were able to trick the bloodhounds on their trail by disguising their smell. D'Amico said the pepper was effective. A prosecutor says Sweat, already a convicted murderer who was serving a life term'll be charged with escape, burglary and a few other criminal charges.
