En el último informe de las Pruebas SABER que arrojó el ICFES sobre el desempeño de los estudiantes de grado quinto de la IE San Isidro Labrador de Atánquez (Cesar), se visibilizó que algunos aprendizajes necesitan ser priorizados para el diseño de acciones de mejora. Uno de estos aprendizajes hace referencia a que el 61% de los estudiantes no usa fracciones comunes para describir situaciones, ni reconocen e interpretan fracciones en diferentes contextos. Apoyándonos en escritos previos de algunos autores que describen esta problemática, se hizo un análisis histórico-epistemológico, disciplinar y didáctico del concepto de fracción. Posteriormente, con la certeza de que hay que empezar por trabajar con los estudiantes las interpretaciones primarias de la fracción dadas a través de la historia (por ejemplo, la de parte-todo), se hizo un diagnóstico de aula concienzudo sobre esta interpretación que nos permitió detectar algunos puntos críticos y así, al final, ofrecer una estrategia didáctica apoyada en el uso de material concreto que permita desarrollar este aprendizaje en los estudiantes. Los resultados de su aplicación se describen también en este trabajo.
