De nombreux linguistes et psychologues (Nelson, 1977 ; Kintsch et Van Dijk, 1978 ; Nelson 1978 ; Freebody et Anderson, 1983 ; Dehnière, 1984 ; Hudson et Nelson, 1983 ; Fayol, 1985) ont étudié le type textuel narratif et ont constaté un impact du degré de familiarité sur la qualité des restitutions : plus la situation référée est connue, meilleure est la capacité de compréhension/mémorisation/restitution. Cependant, lors de ces protocoles expérimentaux, c'est le thème de l'histoire qui est plus ou moins connu du sujet (i.e. "goûter d'anniversaire" vs "retirer de l'argent à la banque"). En ce qui nous concerne, nous avons cherché à voir ce qu'il en était si le contenu du récit était ou non déjà inscrit en mémoire à long terme. Pour cela, nous avons travaillé avec des enfants âgés de 6/7 ans (i.e. CP) à 10/11 ans (i.e. CM2) et un groupe référence d'adultes (i.e. étudiants de fin de 1ère année universitaire) et nous avons comparé des rappels écrits effectués sur la base du Petit Chaperon Rouge (i.e. histoire au contenu [+ connu]) et de Dan, le petit chasseur canadien (i.e. histoire au contenu [- connu]). L'analyse se préoccupe des niveaux macro- et microstructurel en ce sens qu'elle observe le niveau des composantes narratives jusqu'au niveau du mot en passant par l'examen des sous-composantes narratives et de la relation sémantique de cause/conséquence. Les résultats obtenus attestent les thèses déjà soutenues au sujet du degré de familiarité du thème : un contenu préalablement connu permet à l'enfant de libérer de l'espace cognitif en mémoire de travail, et ce, tant en phase de compréhension/mémorisation qu'en phase de restitution. En effet, cette thèse montre que le trait [+ connu] permet un allègement des opérations de haut niveau (i.e. activation et organisation des contenus par exemple) qui se traduit par un traitement significativement plus important des opérations de bas niveau (i.e. niveau grapho-moteur par exemple).
