Questo articolo vuole identificare le caratteristiche essenziali del fumetto memoriale, ovvero il fumetto che rappresenta il processo di ricostruzione della memoria di un evento traumatico, in modo particolare una guerra. Attraverso l’analisi di un corpus di 11 album realizzati da autori provenienti da paesi diversi (Canada, Francia, Italia, Stati Uniti) e che raccontano guerre diverse (Algeria, Balcani, Spagna, Vietnam e le due Guerre mondiali), cercheremo di determinare quali siano gli elementi formali ricorrenti il cui insieme costituisce un elemento fondante di questo genere emergente, la cui esistenza dimostreremo così. Esamineremo inoltre il co-testo semiotico delle occorrenze delle “parole della memoria” per verificare se esse si collocano in punti cruciali dello sviluppo narrativo.
