Abstract
An early suspicion of cancer recurrence usually results in earlier diagnosis and better treatment outcomes. Because recurrence is not usually associated with overt symptoms, a physical sign may be an early and only sign of disease. The establishment of precedence for hot foot syndrome dates back more than 30 years, and was characterized as a âvery valuable indicator which may precede all other evidence of tumour recurrenceâ. This article pays tribute to, and reports a case series of, Dr Ramon Evans, a pioneer in pain treatment in Canada. Dr Evans was a highly respected teacher and clinician, who practiced in an era predating contemporary advanced diagnostic and imaging techniques, using observational data in the âold wayâ similar to other medical pioneers.
