Abstract
Mexico is a country with an important plant wealth since it has around 10% of all plant species existing in the world. The Asteraceae family is large and contains a wide variety of secondary metabolites, which have potential as new treatments for a wide range of diseases. An example is the Verbesina genus, which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anticryptococcal, anti-acne and healing activity. On the other hand, families of secondary metabolites such as terpenoids and triterpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, sesquiterpenes, eudesmanes and saponins have been reported within the Verbesina genus. A species of interest belonging to this genus is Verbesina persicifolia DC, which is widely distributed from Canada to South America. In Mexico, Verbesina persicifolia DC. It is also popularly known as “Huichín”, “Taxiwua”, “Xilpopotok” and “Tlamacas”. Even though there are few studies, it has been reported that this plant exerts anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and antiproliferative effects. Likewise, phytochemical studies indicate that this species has sesquiterpenlactones, eudesmanes and terpenes. However, the little information related to the pharmacological activity and chemical characterization of this plant, combined with the different ethnomedical uses it has, highlights the need for systematic studies that allow validating its use and identifying the metabolites responsible for the pharmacological effects of Verbesina persicifolia DC
