Il volume si propone di affrontare il tema dell'impatto del multiculturalismo sugli ordinamenti democratici da una prospettiva innovativa, finora non sufficientemente approfondita. Gli studi su questo tema si sono prevalentemente concentrati sui problemi riguardanti i "diritti" di minoranze e comunità (ed in particolare sui rapporti fra diritti individuali e diritti "comunitari"), mentre sono passate in secondo piano le questioni relative all'influenza del multiculturalismo sugli aspetti di carattere organizzativo dello Stato democratico nelle sue diverse articolazioni (federale, regionale, unitario). In tal senso, ed in una prospettiva comparatistica, è apparso più utile incentrare la ricerca su un confronto fra esperienze nazionali, piuttosto che su un approccio trasversale alle diverse tematiche che compongono il dibattito sul multiculturalismo (quali la rappresentanza politica, le minoranze linguistiche, i diritti dei popoli autoctoni, le minoranze religiose, le regole della cittadinanza). La prima parte del volume è dedicata allo studio degli ordinamenti "geneticamente" multiculturali, cioè stati federali nei quali il carattere multiculturale rappresenta una delle componenti essenziali nella costruzione e nell'evoluzione dell'impianto costituzionale (Stati Uniti, Canada e India). La seconda parte del volume è dedicata allo studio delle risposte giuridiche al fenomeno del multiculturalismo elaborate da alcuni stati del vecchio continente.
