ABSTRACT: This thesis presents an enhanced implementation of the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for solving unsteady flow around moving boundaries. The significance of addressing flow dynamics in the proximity of moving objects cannot be understated, given its profound scientific significance and numerous practical applications across industries. The primary objective of this thesis is to integrate the LBM with a method designed for handling moving boundaries. A comprehensive literature review revealed that the overset method was previously integrated with LBM to address the challenge of moving boundaries, which retrieves second-order accuracy. However, it became apparent that no previous research had implemented the integration of a non-uniform grid with the Lattice Boltzmann overset (LB-overset) approach, thus highlighting a critical research gap. The utilization of a quadtree grid, which is a non-uniform grid, complements the LBM effectively due to its orthogonal cartesian equal spacing characteristics. This grid structure enhances simulation efficiency and significantly reduces the computational resources required by reducing the number of nodes within the computational domain. Nevertheless, incorporating a quadtree grid into LBM demands specialized handling of particle distribution functions' streaming. One of these specialized treatments involves the interpolated post-collision PDF streaming technique, which is commonly described in the literature as necessitating spatial interpolation, such as bicubic interpolation, thereby adding complexity and heightened computational demands. Hence, the identified research gap is the absence of studies implementing the LB-overset method with quadtree grid refinement based on the interpolated PDF streaming approach. Consequently, this research gap directly defines this thesis's main objective: to verify and code-to-code verify the integrated Lattice Boltzmann method with the moving overset approach, coupled with quadtree grid refinement based on the interpolated PDF streaming scheme. The main objective is achieved through the execution of three key steps. The initial step involves the implementation of the standard LBM encompassing various boundary conditions, including the treatment of curved boundaries. This phase also covers fundamental aspects of data structure design, description of boundary conditions, and detecting boundary, solid, and fluid nodes. Subsequently, the second step involves integrating and examining LBM with the overset method, which serves as an intermediary stage before incorporating the quadtree mesh. The overset method segregates the domain into a stationary grid in the inertial frame (fixed grid) and a grid associated with moving boundaries (moving grid). These grids communicate through border interpolations, and extensive investigation into border interpolation is conducted, with bicubic interpolation yielding the most accurate results. In the final step, the quadtree mesh is integrated into the LB-overset method, with the addition of the interpolated post-collision PDF streaming approach. This integration necessitates the transformation of the moving grid into a quadtree mesh, while the fixed grid is still a uniform grid with the maximum moving grid spatial displacement. Furthermore, this thesis introduces an enhancement to the interpolated post-collision PDF streaming approach by exploiting the Lagrangian characteristics of the LBM nature. It introduces interpolation methods based on the 1-D Lagrangian link interpolation, thus forming what is referred to as the spatial Lagrangian-link interpolation post-collision PDF streaming scheme, which initially applies spatial interpolation as a predictor step. Subsequently, this spatial predictor-interpolated value is utilized for a Lagrangian-link corrector interpolation. These innovations significantly reduce the computational resources required and enhance simulation efficiency. Additionally, a node-splitting technique is developed to further increase the efficiency of the proposed interpolation scheme. Furthermore, the integrated method undergoes thorough verification and code-to-code verification through diverse test cases, maintaining a second-order accuracy without degradation. Also, key parameters such as the lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and Strouhal number align closely with previously published data. By completing this third and final step, the thesis’s primary objective is accomplished.
