Abstract
Three Al Jazeera journalists have been sentenced to three years in prison in Egypt for \spreading false news\. One of the journalists' defense lawyers--- Amal Clooney--- tells Al Jazeera the verdict's unfair. The three journalists--- a Canadian national, an Australian and an Egyptian--- were arrested in December 20-13 when security forces raided the hotel suite they were working in. They were accused of being part of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, which the journalists said wasn't true. They were originally convicted in June 20-14--- two were sentenced to seven years in prison, the third ten years. But that ruling was overturned--- and this new sentence comes from the retrial. The judge says he sentenced them because they weren't registered properly. They'd brought in equipment without security officials' approval and had spread \fake news\. The Australian journalist--- Peter Greste --- wasn't at the trial, he was deported earlier this year. He says the verdict'll have a huge impact on his colleagues who've been taken away to jail. The journalists' lawyers say they're hoping Egypt's president'll pardon them. He's spoken out against the case before.
