Abstract
Tämä tutkielma käsittelee ns. Sturmin sanoja, äärettömiä ja jaksottomia binäärisanoja, jotka ovat mahdollisimman yksinkertaisia. Sturmin sanat ovat erityisesti 1990-luvulta lähtien olleet suosittu sanojen kombinatoriikan tutkimuskohde, mutta näihin sanoihin liittyviä tuloksia esiintyy harvakseltaan aikaisemminkin, aikaisimmillaan 1770-luvulla. Sturmin sanojen tutkimuksen eräs pääpiirre on sanoille löydettyjen luonnehdintojen eli ekvivalenttien määritelmien yllättävän suuri määrä. \n \nTutkielma esittää täsmentäen alusta alkaen Sturmin sanojen perusteorian ja täydelliset todistukset valitulle kuudelle luonnehdinnalle. Esitettäviin luonnehdintoihin lukeutuvat niin klassiset luonnehdinnat mekaanisina sanoina ja tasapainotettuina sanoina kuin muutamat uudemmat luonnehdinnat, esimerkkinä luonnehdinta palindromikompleksisuuden avulla. Tutkielmassa todistettavat luonnehdinnat eivät kata kaikkia tunnettuja luonnehdintoja, vaan tutkielmaan on valittu mainitut klassiset sekä niiden kanssa sopivan kokonaisuuden muodostavat luonnehdinnat. Lisäksi osoitetaan hieman perustuloksia Sturmin morfismeista. Tutkielma on kattava johdatus Sturmin sanojen teoriaan suomeksi. Esitietoja ei tutkielman lukemiseksi juuri tarvita.
