Malgré une hausse de la fréquentation des institutions muséales d’histoire et de société au Québec, il existe un certain désintérêt chez le public local, particulièrement chez les jeunes adultes, envers leurs collections historiques. Au cours d’une visite, le sensorium se limite généralement à la stimulation par la vue et l’ouïe. Des tentatives pour augmenter le spectre du sensorium à l’aide de techniques sensorielles ont eu lieu, mais celles-ci sont généralement conçues pour l’accessibilité universelle et plus rarement pour la mise en valeur des collections. Bien que l’histoire, la sociologie et l’anthropologie sensorielles aient déjà été abordées par les chercheurs, nous constatons que l’apparition des sens dans le milieu muséal est un phénomène grandissant mondialement, ce qui justifie l’importance d’effectuer un état des lieux actuel. À ce sujet, on remarque un certain retard dans les musées d’histoire et de société par rapport aux musées pour enfants ainsi qu’aux musées de sciences et d’art contemporain. La question posée par cette recherche consiste donc à savoir si une muséographie sensorielle peut avoir une portée sur le rayonnement et l’interprétation des collections historiques. L’hypothèse soutenue confirme cette portée, ce que nous allons illustrer à l’aide d’exemples d’expositions multisensorielles ayant eu lieu à travers le monde depuis le tournant des années 2000.
