Les fascicules de cette collection, rédigés conjointement par des chercheurs et des usagers français, suisses, belges et québécois, offrent une nouvelle approche de la réforme de l’orthographe française. Chacun d’eux est consacré à un point particulier, reconnu comme source d’erreurs fréquentes, et donne lieu à une règle générale, fondée sur des études approfondies mais exprimée en termes simples afin d’être facilement mémorisée.Le participe passé conjugué avec avoir et être est tantôt invariable et tantôt accordé, tantôt avec le sujet et tantôt avec le complément d’objet direct. Il en résulte une trentaine de règles, exceptions et exceptions d’exceptions qui en font le point le plus délicat de la grammaire française. Et aussi le point le plus souvent mis en avant par les commissions de réforme successives du ministre de l’Instruction publique, puis du ministre de l’Éducation nationale, depuis la fin du XIXe siècle. La présente étude reprend le dossier sur des bases entièrement nouvelles en partant de trois grands principes : (1) Non pas affaiblir mais renforcer le système orthographique en réduisant le nombre d’exceptions ; (2) Établir une hiérarchie des règles à partir de «règles premières» ; (3) Distinguer la syntaxe de la sémantique et en cas de conflit entre elles, accorder la priorité à la syntaxe. À l’arrivée, deux règles simples et sans exceptions.
