Abstract
Les nombreux problèmes liés aux changements climatiques observés au cours des dernières années ont forcé les gouvernements et les citoyens de la planète à réfléchir sérieusement sur l’impact qu’ils pouvaient avoir sur notre environnement, notre économie et notre société. Les gouvernements fédéraux, provinciaux et municipaux ainsi que les organisations sociales envisagent diverses solutions pour les contrer les effets liés aux changements climatiques ou, le cas échéant, créer des mesures pour s’y adapter. Les toits verts figurent sur la liste des solutions qui permettent de contrer les effets des changements climatiques en milieu urbain. Cet essai permettra de faire un survol de l’évolution de l’implantation des toits verts au Canada et aux États-Unis par l’analyse détaillée d’exemples de projets de toits verts construits en Amérique du Nord. L’examen des textes des cas étudiés font ressortir les bénéfices des toits verts sur le plan environnemental, social et économique. L’objectif consiste à valider le bien-fondé de la promotion des toits verts en vue de déterminer si on doit encourager l’adoption de cette pratique.
