Quel plaisir de retrouver Cyrille Barrette. L’auteur de La vraie nature de la bête humaine (2020), assurément l’un des meilleurs essais scientifiques parus au Québec ces dernières années, nous revient avec un autre étincelant essai intitulé L’étonnant Panda : Erreur de la nature ou merveille d’adaptation?. La fascination de celui qui fut pendant plus de trente ans professeur au département de biologie de l’Université Laval pour le gros nounours aux yeux tristes et aux oreilles rondes ne date pas d’hier. Déjà au cours de ses études doctorales à l’Université de Calgary, au début des années 1970, il avait été subjugué par une remarquable monographie du spécialiste de l’anatomie comparée D. Dwight Davis consacrée au panda géant et parue quelques années plus tôt. Maintenant qu’il est rentré du front où se déroule la conquête de la connaissance scientifique de fine pointe, Barrette s’est donné pour but de pour nous faire découvrir en détail différentes facettes l’objet de ses émerveillements de biologiste d’autrefois. Avant d’entrer dans le vif du sujet, l’auteur renouvelle sa profession de foi matérialiste. Disciple du grand naturaliste britannique Charles Darwin, il explicite le « contrat de méthode » (p. 14) tacite au cœur de la définition de la science consistant à s’engager à s’abstenir d’invoquer le surnaturel pour expliquer la nature et à rechercher dans la nature elle-même toutes les explications de la nature.
