Abstract
En 2009, la fouille d’un puits d’époque romaine au nord-est de la commune de Béziers (34) a débouché dans une galerie souterraine creusée dans les molasses miocènes. L’ensemble captait l’eau d’une nappe perchée et récoltait par percolation, les fines gouttelettes contenues dans l’aquifère gréseux. En 2011, deux nouveaux puits romains ont été fouillés quelques hectomètres plus au nord. Là encore, l’intervention archéologique fait apparaître un même schéma de fonctionnement. Déjà observée au siècle dernier dans certaines publications archéologiques biterroises, cette technique d’exploitation de l’eau souterraine en puits-galerie connait de nombreuses similitudes avec quelques ouvrages recensés en gaule romaine et à plus grande échelle, sur tout le pourtour méditerranéen. Ces systèmes hydrauliques plurimillénaires sont regroupés sous le terme générique de « qanàt ».
