Abstract
Niger is a landlocked country of Western Africa, extending from the Tropic of Capricorn southwards to Lake Chad in the east and Nigeria in the West. Nearly half of the country is desert and only the Southern quarter receives more than 300mm of annual rainfall. Most livestock are kept by pastoral nomads and include a significant camel population. Niger is a net exporter of cattle and small ruminants, particularly to the West African coastal countries. Livestock contributes about 11% to the gross domestic product. However, the Sahelian draught of the early seventies devastated the Nigerien livestock herds, especially in the north, and these herds are only slowly recovering. The objective of government policy is aimed at restoring livestock numbers to their pre-drought level by introducing improved husbandry techniques, and thus establishing the export market.
