Abstract
Il s agira dans cette étude comparative de présenter, puis de définir, un mouvement littéraire connu sous le nom de réalisme magique - le situant d abord en marge d autres mouvements tels que le fantastique, le merveilleux, le surréalisme et le postmodernisme. Un survol de son développement au cours du 20 siècle en Europe, en Amérique latine, puis au Canada nous permettra de dégager les diverses significations qu ont accordées les écrivains et critiques à la locution selon les époques et les pays. Nous constaterons que son déclin en Europe a correspondu à son essor sur le Nouveau Continent où il a représenté, pour les auteurs, plus qu une réaction contre le réalisme (la mimésis) mais un moyen de ré-imaginer et de ré-inventer leur monde par un usage particulier des techniques du fantastique se traduisant par une manipulation systématique du cadre spatio-temporel et de la voix narrative dans les récits. Le réalisme magique exprime la fusion totale du réel et de l imaginaire.
