Este artículo se propone ahondar en la construcción de la paratextualidad en tanto aspecto de la obra literaria que le permite al Autor ejercer control sobre su discurso. A propósito del paratexto, Genette ((1987) 2001) ha señalado que más que como un límite o una frontera cerrada, el paratexto debe pensarse como un umbral, que permite al lector la posibilidad de ingresar o de retroceder en el texto. Así, el interés de este trabajo es indagar acerca del estatuto y función discursivo-enunciativa de los títulos de obra. Para ello tomaremos como ejemplo el caso de dos novelas que pertenecen al mundo de las minorías culturales: Shulamis. Stories from a Montreal Childhood de la escritora canadiense de origen judío Shulamis Yelin (1913-2002) y The House on Mango Street de la escritora chicana Sandra Cisneros (n. 1954). En tanto zona de frontera, el espacio que construye el paratexto invita al lector a introducirse en una obra pero también a transitar los lugares culturales que se instituyen en los bordes del texto. Según nuestra hipótesis, tanto en la obra de Cisneros como en la de Yelin, los elementos del paratexto -más específicamente, los títulos, las dedicatorias, los epígrafes, las notas- cumplen con dos cometidos principales. Por un lado, el paratexto instaura puntos de heterogeneidad que contribuyen al interlingüismo constitutivo del discurso de estas escritoras. Por el otro, en el seno del paratexto se definen una serie de instrucciones de lectura que tienen por objeto ejercer control sobre la interpretación del discurso.
