All chapters are the original work of the author (with the support of Derek Ruths), with the following exceptions: early versions of Experiment 1 and Experiment 3 were discussed and implemented with Sunyam Bagga, however the linguistic alignment methods, codebase, data and generated results presented in this thesis were completely changed or redone from these earlier experiments.The original conception of both experiments was entirely the author's.The cohesion survey used in Experiment 3 was conducted by the author alone.Matthew Gittings and Haji Mohammad Saleem contributed to collecting the subreddit characteristics used in Experiment 2, as well as the set of support versus hostile subreddits in Experiment 4, but had no involvement with the work on linguistic alignment.
