Traditionnellement, les médias de masse, tels que les journaux et les chaînes de télévision, étaient les seuls à pouvoir diffuser de l'information à grande échelle dans la population. Au Québec, la plupart des médias adhèrent à des codes éthiques et sont encadrés par la Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec (FPJQ) et le Conseil de presse du Québec. Cela aide à assurer la qualité et l'exactitude de l'information diffusée. Cependant, l'avènement d'Internet a changé la donne. Les plateformes sociales comme Facebook ont offert aux médias alternatifs la possibilité d'atteindre une nouvelle audience, tout en créant une nouvelle dynamique d'espace public de discussions et d'échanges. Bien que cela puisse être bénéfique pour le partage d'information et les interactions sociales, il y a également des risques associés à la diffusion de fausses informations. Les médias alternatifs ne sont pas soumis aux mêmes normes de qualité et de vérification que les médias traditionnels, ce qui peut compromettre l'intégrité de l'information diffusée. Certains d’entre eux partagent également de la désinformation et des théories du complot à leurs audiences. De plus, les algorithmes de recommandation de contenu de Facebook peuvent favoriser la diffusion de contenus sensationnalistes, controversés ou trompeurs, dans le fil d’actualité de ses utilisateurs, au détriment de contenus plus fiables.
