Dans l’est du Canada, les engins forestiers sont fortement sollicités dans des conditions météorologiques et géographiques extrêmes. Une telle utilisation engendre une usure rapide. Lors de bris, des pièces sont remplacées et, inévitablement, l’ensemble de la machine doit être renouvelé pour assurer une continuité des opérations de l’entreprise. Dans un tel contexte, il est difficile d’établir avec précision à quel moment il est plus judicieux de remplacer la machine plutôt que de la réparer. Une mauvaise décision peut avoir des conséquences financières sérieuses pour une entreprise, habituellement dirigée par un entrepreneur forestier. Des études ont établi que la plupart des entrepreneurs forestiers disposent d’outils peu sophistiqués pour déterminer le moment de remplacement de la machinerie et dans la plupart des cas, ils utilisent seulement leur expérience personnelle.Les travaux entrepris visent à combler cette lacune. Dans un premier temps, on compare les caractéristiques des modèles de décision de remplacement trouvés dans la littérature avec les pratiques de gestion des entrepreneurs forestiers telles que rapportées par les sondages du PREfoRT. Ensuite, un modèle de remplacement adapté au contexte de l’entrepreneur forestier dans l’est du Canada est développé et finalement testé avec des données fournies par un groupe d’experts. Le modèle développé utilise des périodes d’analyse mensuelles, un fonds de roulement, l’utilisation variable décroissante et un taux de rendement minimum acceptable diffèrent du taux d’emprunt, permettant ainsi l’analyse de différentes options de financement.
